Pristina, February 19, 2015 - In a reception held on Thursday, February 20, 2015, the USAID Kosovo Mission Director James Hope along with the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce President Safet Gerxhaliu and the American Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Arian Zeka marked the 1st Annual Western Balkans VIS Pre - Moot Competition. The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is one of the most prestigious international moot court competitions for law students in the world, held in Vienna, Austria, every year for the past 21 years. Its goal is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration and to train the law leaders oftomorrowin methods of alternative dispute resolution.Participants come from among290 Universities from over 65 countries. Two teams from Kosovo, one from the University of Prishtina and one from American Education in Kosovo (AUK), have participated in this competition for several years.

The event gathered representatives of the US Government, the Republic of Kosovo, eminent lawyers from Kosovo and the region, and law-students from Sarajevo, Macedonia and Albania. The VIS Pre - Moot Competition in Pristina is the first ever VIS PreMoot Competition to have been organized in Kosovo for local participants and those from regional countries. In addition to the teams from the two Kosovo Universities, this competition gathered teams from the University of Skopje, University of Tirana, and University of Sarajevo.

The USAID Contract Law Enforcement (CLE) Program together with the University of Pristina – Faculty of Law, and American Education in Kosovo (AUK) are hosting the 1st Annual Western Balkans VIS Pre-Moot Competition. Even though Students from Kosovo have participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition for several years, this is the first time that the VIS Pre Moot Competition is being organized in the region. The VIS Pre-Moot Competition will serve as a platform for the participants to improve their logical and legal thinking by competing with other teams. Having properly trained lawyers will instill greater confidence in arbitration, and create a sustainable infrastructure for ADR mechanisms in Kosovo.

The USAID Contract Law Enforcement (CLE) Program is hosting the Vis Pre-Moot Competition with the aim of making it an annual competition whereby Kosovo nationals will have the chance to welcome their peers and compete with one another. In the meantime, all the participants will have the opportunity to socialize in a multi-cultural environment.

Being the first of its kind in the region, this competition will increase Kosovo’s visibility, and highlight its commitment to developing a new generation of young, well-trained legal professionals in the area of commercial arbitration. Furthermore, the Vis Pre-Moot Competition serves as a vehicle for raising awareness on the availability arbitration services, a mechanism of alternative dispute resolution. USAID has invested significantly in developing a sustainable ADR infrastructure through supporting the establishment of arbitration tribunals at the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo and the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce.
